KEMU Academic Council Forms Inquiry Committee
Lahore: August 13:The Academic Council of King Edward Medical University (KEMU) has constituted an inquiry committee to hold inquiry into the incident of alleged harassment of Professor of Paediatrics Dr Akmal Laeeq and other doctors and present its report and recommendations within seven days.
The “Fact Finding Committee” headed by Prof Arshad Chohan and comprising Prof Syed Asghar Naqi and Prof Aftab Asif and “Negotiating Committee” headed by Prof Asad Aslam Khan and comprising Prof Riaz Ahmad Warraich, Prof Irshad Hussain Qureshi and Prof Maroof Aziz Khan presented their reports before the Academic Council in its 57th meeting held on Wednesday. On the basis of reports of the two committees, the Academic Council formed a committee headed by Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Kazi Muhammad Saeed, Prof Dr Ashraf Shaheen, Prof Dr Akram Sahaf and a Law Officer, which will hold inquiry into the incident of harassment of Prof Akmal Laeeq and occupation of Vice Chancellor’s office by some members of Young Doctors Association (YDA) of Mayo Hospital.
The Academic Council has also decided to make the process of induction of postgraduate trainees through proper channel in a transparent manner.
Meanwhile, Young Doctors Association (YDA), Punjab, has also offered an unconditional apology to Prof Akmal Laeeq for hurting his feelings, claiming to have highest respect for teachers. However, it also made it clear that YDA would not allow anyone to play with the future of postgraduate residents (PGRs).
The YDA spokesman Dr Khurram Shahzad, in a press statement, said that those elements, who had accused YDA members of locking up a professor, have couldn’t stand on their allegation before the fact-finding committee.
He said that some elements of a so-called doctors’ representative body, which has been dumped by doctors, was blowing up this issue for its own interest.
This so-called body, on the signal of government, is trying to keep the YDA away from its protest movement for the rights of young doctors and PGRs from August 19, 2015.

They YDA also alleged that some elements were trying to create rifts within doctors’ community, adding that those very elements were involved in stop induction of PGRs, whose orders have already been issued. While accusing Prof Khalid Masood Gondal, SVP College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) of politicizing the incident of alleged harassment of a professor, Dr Khurram Shahzad said that it would not divert attention from the mismanagement and irregularities in CPSP and YDA would continue to highlight them.
He said that YDA would hold protest in Mayo Hospital if PGRs induction was not ensured and the issue of alleged harassment of a professor was not resolved even after YDA’s official apology. The news.
