IJT 'damages' hostels in protest over load shedding

Peshawar: Activists of Islami Jamiat-e-Talba (IJT) allegedly damaged the Islamia College University (ICU) hostels during a protest rally it staged against the continued power outages in the university. They also blocked the Jamrud Road.

The IJT activists gathered at the lawns of the college, and allegedly damaged the hostels while seeking alternate arrangements for power supply to borders. Oriental, Khushhal and Buttler hostels were damaged.

Students of the ICU are currently sitting the annual intermediate examinations, and have been suffering due to unscheduled power outages.

The protesters blocked the road outside Khyber Teaching Hospital (KTH) after damaging the hostels. Hospital visitors suffered because of the road blockage. Ambulances changed their routes after charged protesters damaged some public vehicles.

ICU student Amir Khan said that students were tired of load shedding but as responsible citizens, they should lodge their protest peacefully.

"The situation worsened after IJT activists started protesting violently," Khan said, adding that other political activists also joined the IJT.

Denial: The IJT Peshawar information secretary admitted that the rally was organised and guided by IJT but denied the allegations that its activists created chaos. "Some hidden elements created chaos in the peaceful rally," he said.

He said it was due to the IJT's efforts that electricity generators were installed in the University of Peshawar hostels. No one from the university administration was available for comment on the incident. Daily Times
