Dr Ahmed Shadoul  WHO Maternal Neonatal & Child Health (MNCH) officer in Pakistan & Dr Khizar Ashraf (Focal Person in Pakistan for Nutrition-WHO) visited (University Medical & Dental College) The University of Faisalabad on 18th May 2010. The team was given a presentation on mortality figures regarding infants and mothers dying during child birth. In developing countries 538000 women die during child birth, in other words every 10 minutes a women dies. It was found that major cause of deaths in mothers was bleeding and infection which makes around 40 % of total maternal deaths. These are preventable causes and Western countries have markedly reduced their maternal and infant mortality figures due to strong Political commitment, Education and Better Health Services.  Pakistan stands among the one five of countries having highest Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR). It was informed that 500 maternal deaths per 100000 live births per year mean 50,000 maternal morbidity and illness. In Pakistan more than 20% babies are low birth weight and this is serious issue as it reflects the health of the mother who is already anemic and malnourished.  Dr Shadoul in his address appreciated the Team of University Medical & Dental College Faisalabad for bringing up the issue with some suggestions. He reiterated that WHO was fully committed to reduce MMR & IMR in Pakistan MNCH program and would like to join hands with University Medical & Dental College Faisalabad to facilitate the efforts to reduce MMR & IMR in Faisalabad. He was given presentation by Prof Dr Ehsan Ul Haq & Dr Zahid Masood. Dr Khizar (WHO focal person for Nutrition in Pakistan) also showed deep interest to facilitate the Medical College and Hospital in their efforts to address the issue of Malnutrition in children. He added that over 47% of Pakistan children are malnourished. He said that he will make certain arrangements in terms of capacity building and other possible assistance.  Participants included Prof A G Rehan, Dr Sadia Hameed, Dr Mubashra Naz, Dr Ayesha Tanveer and Dr Aneela Amber representing faculty of, Gynecology and Peadiatrics departments from Madina Teaching Hospital. Dr Ahmed Shadoul was presented University memento by Prof Dr A G Rehan.
