PESHAWAR: An eminent psychiatrist from Peshawar, Prof Dr Khalid A. Mufti, has been awarded distinguished fellowship by the American Psychiatric Association in recognition of his services in the field.

The senior psychiatrist received the honour at recent conference held in New Orleans, United States. He also holds the fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists United Kingdom. The leading doctor, who also heads a non-governmental organisation, Horizon, that works in the mental health sector, told The News that his organisation had treated a total of 30,000 trauma-related and mentally-ill patients so far.

Giving break-up of the patients, he said 50 per cent of them were women, 40 per cent male and 10 per cent children. The doctor, who is also a former principal of the Khyber Medical College, said his organisation had worked in the field of disaster mental health for Afghan refugees, Balakot earthquake victims and internally displaced persons of Swat and other areas and won recognition at home and abroad.

The psychiatrist said hundreds of medical practitioners, nurses, social worker and volunteers had been trained in the mental health awareness and rehabilitation to play their role in improving the situation.

“Militancy, poverty and unemployment are the main reasons for the increase in number of patients suffering from trauma and mental disorders in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa,” he said, adding that militancy and economic constraints were increasing the mental illness.The news
