Prayer place controversy at Punjab University

Lahore: The Imamia Students Organization (ISO) Pakistan has demanded separate places for Shia students to offer prayers at the Punjab University hostels.

In a press statement, ISO Pakistan Information Secretary Mumtaz Malik alleged that some PU officials did not allow Shia students to offer their collective prayers separately at the varsity's Student Teacher Centre ground a few days back. He alleged the university guards also manhandled the innocent students, adding that an FIR was registered against three PU officials in Muslim Town police station in this connection.

When contacted, PU Registrar Prof Muhammad Naeem Khan denied the allegations and said the university administration wanted that everybody observed discipline. He said the student fraternity should observe the holy month of Ramazan in a friendly environment. He said the PU had designated prayer rooms in all the 22 hostels where all the Muslim students were allowed to offer their prayers freely without any sectarian divide. He said the university had already provided ample place for prayers and would not allow anyone to divide the students in sects. He said all students in the PU were equal before the law and the administration treated them equally. Dr Naeem also expressed ignorance about the registration of an FIR against the PU officials.
