Summons for Bahauddin Zakariya University head, two others: Candidate denied admission

Multan: Lahore High Court's Multan Bench on Wednesday issued notices to the Bahauddin Zakariya University vice-chancellor, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences dean and the admission committee for MPhil chairman on the complaint of a candidate that he had been denied admission without any justification.

Muhammad Asif Naeem, a candidate for MPhil at the Bahauddin Zakariya University, had filed a petition before Justice Saifur Rehman against what he said violation of rules in the admission of MPhil sociology by the university administration. BZU Vice-Chancellor Dr Muhammad Zaffarullah, Dean Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Dr Syed Khwaja Alqama and admission committee chairman Mian Ghulam Yasin were made respondents.

Asif Naeem contended that he applied for admission to MPhil in sociology according to the rules and appeared in the pre-admission test along with other candidates, though there was no scope for test in any (of the varsity) rules.According to the university criteria for admission, he said, seventy per cent marks were for academic record of the candidate and 30 per cent marks were for pre-admission test that was held on Jan 16. He said he attempted his test properly and the general merit list and waiting merit list were pasted on Jan 19, but his name was not in both lists.

He said he was given only 13.5 per cent marks in the test and though he obtained 'A' grade according to the certificate of matriculation, in the merit list it was considered 'B' grade. He said when he contacted the officials for correction of the anomaly, they didn't pay heed and denied him admission. He sought directions to the respondents to give admission to him.

Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Dean Dr Khwaja Muhammad Alqama said he had received an application of the aspirant, marked by the VC. He admitted that the pre-admission test had no legality and there was no such test in any other department of the university as "the students must clear only NTS examination within a year of taking admission". The university was looking into the matter, he added. Dawn
