National Institute of Oceanography Karachi  held Seminar on history of Indus river

LAHORE:THE Faculty of Fisheries and Wildlife of the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) Lahore arranged a seminar on History of the Indus River Systemon the City Campus on Thursday.

Experts from Pakistan and the USA spoke on the subject, covering the topics of oceanography, shrimp farming and role of climate change in river delta development.

Liviu Giosan, a geologist from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, USA, discussed the historic formation of Indus delta with scientific data, saying the tidal energy erosion processes made it difficult for delta formation in the present climate change scenario and consequently sea level rises.

He feared that reduction of sediment due to dams and diversions of rivers might lead to completely wiping out the delta in 100-200 years all over the world unless mitigation measures were taken. He said the Indus was the 20th largest river for water discharge, 5th largest river for sediment discharge and it also had the 5th largest delta.

National Institute of Oceanography Karachi Director General Dr MM Rabbani highlighted economic potential and viability of shrimp culture in Pakistan and the role of mangrove forest with regard to life cycle of the shrimp.

UVAS Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Nawaz said the global warming and rising sea water level was the matter of concern and we have to take remedial measures to avoid their bad affects.

He said the UVAS academic programmes covered all aspects of animal and related sciences and the university was developing state-of-the-art infrastructure required for academic and research development.

He said the UVAS was the only university in the country which was providing academic courses in fisheries at graduate and postgraduate level.

He also desired to develop collaboration between the fisheries department of the UVAS and the National Institute of Oceanography, Karachi.
