Merit list for primary teachers delayed again
Karachi:The Education Department has failed put on display the merit list of Primary School Teachers (PST) uptil now. Surprisingly, the concerned department announced on May 11, 2010, that the merit list has been put on display at the office of District Officer (DO) Education, Secondary and Higher Secondary at Boulton Market and successful candidates could see their names. However, the list has not been finalised yet due to reasons best known to the authorities.
“The list was prepared and all set to make public but then the department ordered scrutiny to make the process clean before anyone started pinpointing finger over the selection matter,” District Officer, Education, Secondary and Higher Secondary (Male), Shabbir Jokhio told The News.
However, he did not mention on which grounds such decisions were made. Similarly, Jokhio was unable to comment why the decision took place after so many months. He further said that the PST merit list would be displayed after 10 to 15 days.
This programme was launched in collaboration with World Bank to increase the literacy rate as well as quality and standard of education in Pakistan. Reforms Support Unit (RSU) was asked to look after the process of appointment of teachers and distribution of salaries on merit.
RSU had recommended the education department that one teacher should cover at least 40 students. Over 3,300 people cleared the test while there were over 500 vacancies available only.
The government advertised the vacancies in 2008 and written test of Higher Secondary Teachers (HST), Junior School Teachers (JST) and PST were conducted on 24, 25 and 26 April 2009 respectively at National Stadium.
Mismanagement during the examinations led to the cancellation of HST and PST test results were cancelled by the authority concerned. Also, the test paper of PST was leaked in various parts of interior Sindh and the exam was called off in the province.
One month later, on May 24 and 26, the department carried out written test of PST and HST respectively at the EXPO Centre in Karachi.
However, the education department did not conduct the test for JST as they considered it was held on merit.
The education department declared 126 female and 27 male candidates passed in the HST and 156 female and 51 male in JST. However, the education department have not issue any successful offer letters till to date.
The successful candidates would receive the contract for three years.
These contracts can be extended in future or the authority concerned can offer them regular jobs in the education sector. The news
