ISLAMABAD: The Senate Standing Committee on Education Tuesday unanimously approved the National Library Act 2010. The Act seeks to acquire, preserve and organize published literary heritage in printed and non-printed formats originated in Pakistan (under the Copyright Law) or produced by Pakistanis abroad or published abroad related to Pakistan. It would also help maintain a universal collection of human knowledge as per our national requirements besides acting as an agency for National Bibliographic Control and to facilitate nation-wide act to library resources available in the country and abroad, Chairman of the Committee Senator S.M. Zafar said. He highlighted the importance of libraries in dissemination of knowledge and promotion of reading culture in the country. Zafar said that the National Library would consist of a main library and Branch Libraries at Islamabad and of such other branch libraries/offices and mobile libraries established in the country with the approval of the Federal Government. The members of the Committee fully endorsed the Chair’s views on significance of libraries and expressed their resolve to help and facilitate setting up of libraries all over the country. They hoped that such an effort would promote reading habits, modify extreme behavior and help bring about healthy change in attitudes, approach and outlook on life.F.P. Report
